Stopped over in Cairo on the way to Johannesburg. We decided to take advantage of a possible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Great Pyramids at night. Cairo itself was an interesting blend of antiquity and modern tackiness. Why do we (in the U.S.) expect other cultures to stay historically intact? Does progress mean everything has to change?
